Ursuline, Tatnall, Charter, Salesianum big winners

In the end, the cream always rises to the top.

That’s exactly what happened this weekend as state champions were crowned in cross country and volleyball. Tatnall swept the boys and girls team titles in the Division II cross country races, while Salesianum and Charter School of Wilmington captured the Division I titles for boys and girls, respectively.

In volleyball, Ursuline edged Padua to capture its third straight state crown, seventh in the last eight years and state-best 11th overall. Also, St. Mark’s edged Archmere to win the volleyball consolation match.

VOLLEYBALL

URSULINE 3, PADUA 1: Mariah Henley had 29 kills and 23 digs as the Raiders (18-1) rallied for a 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 win to capture their third straight state title at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center. Courtney Seitz had 62 assists while Rachel Wiechecki added 21 kills and 18 digs and Lindsay Henzes had 25 digs for Ursuline. Rachel Jenkins had 30 kills and 18 assists and Rhianon Graham had 45 assists and 12 digs for Padua (15-4).

ST. MARK’S 2, ARCHMERE 1: Nikki Christ had 25 assists and Lauren Talley had 10 kills as the Spartans (14-5) took third place in the state tournament, 18-25, 25-23, 15-5 at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center. Samantha Hall had 13 digs and nine kills and Stephanie Zampini for St. Mark’s, which avenged a loss from the regular season. Marissa Eppes had 10 kills and nine digs while younger sister Cara Eppes had 33 assists for Archmere (16-5).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

DIVISION II: Tatnall’s Haley Pierce took first place, winning the 5,000-meter run in a course record 17:48.93 and helping her team capture a sixth straight state title at Killen’s Pond.

The Hornets had six of the top nine finishers as they looked to rebound after failing to win the New Castle County championship a week earlier. Other top finishers for Tatnall included Kallie Fehr (second, 18:53.4), Regana Anderson (third, 18:53.7), Molly Parsons (fifth, 19:21.6), Rebecca Salter (sixth) and Allison Calvarese (eighth, 19:41.4).

Archmere’s Lindsey Olivere was the top finisher not from Tatnall as se placed fourth with a time of 19:08.9. In the overall team competition, Archmere (59), Padua (92), Ursuline (157), and Brandywine (213) rounded out the top five.

DIVISION I: Charter School of Wilmington’s Julie Macedo and Meredith Steenkamer secured the top two places to help the Force capture the state title at Killens Pond. Macedo finished the 5,000-meter race in 18:56.09 while Steenkamer camein at 19:16.6. Overall, Charter had five of the top nine finishers, including Kayleigh Skinner (sixth, 1950.9), Lexi Santer (seventh, 19:57.5) and Amanda Rickert (ninth, 20:18.4). St. Mark’s, Concord, Middletown and Cape Henlopen rounded out the top five finishers.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

DIVISION II: Tatnall’s  Tyler Tate took second place as the Hornets placed four runner among the top seven finishers t capture the state title at Killens Pond.Tate finished the 5,000-meter run in 16:37.3 while teammates Patrick Manley (16:55.5), Sam Parsons (16:59.5) and Kyle McFoy (17:05) placed fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively. Archmere’s Ryan Lee won the race’s individual title, completing the race in 16:19.72. Archmere, Milford, St. Andrew’s and Brandywine rounded out the top five team finishers.

DIVISION I: Salesianum’s Charlie Field and Matt McKenna took second and third place respectively as the Sallies won the state title for the 35th time in 39 seasons at Killens Pond.Field completed the 5,000-meter course in 16:31.1 while McKenna came in at 16:31.8. Saint Mark’s Zach Kaminski won the overall individual title at 16:26.33. St. Mark’s, Charter School of Wilmington, Concord and A.I. du Pont rounded out the top five team finishers.
