Here are what we thought to be the top 10 performances around the state in the regular-season’s final week. Check back next week for our playoff Hot List, and we will be starting our basketball version soon.
Quentin Williams, quarterback, Tampa Jefferson: Williams went 14-for-16 for 312 yards and four touchdown passes in a 69-8 win over Middleton before being relieved late in the second half. Williams finished the regular season with a Hillsborough County-leading 31 TD passes to also break the school record of 29 set by Stephen Garcia, who is now the starter at South Carolina. Williams, a junior, has 47 career TD passes and could reach the country record with a big 2010 season – the mark is 84 set by former Tampa Plant QB (and current Georgia Bulldog) Aaron Murray.
Teddy Bridgewater, quarterback, Miami Northwestern: The junior completed his first eight passes and finished 18 of 24 for 210 yards and four touchdowns in a 32-7 win over Jackson for the Bulls’ sixth consecutive victory in the Soul Bowl. Bridgewater, who threw three of his TD passes to Eli Rogers, also led the Bulls in rushing with 57 yards on 10 carries.
Jordan Armstrong, quarterback, Varela: The sophomore was 14 of 18 for 367 yards and four touchdown passes in a 43-14 win over Coral Park in both teams’ season finale. WRs Brian Maura and Shaun Corbett did all the damage, catching two TDs each with nine receptions total and 296 yards.
Jarvis Bridge, running back, Coral Gables: The senior set a school record with 332 yards rushing and TDs of 50, 48, 41 and 10 yards as Coral Gables beat Miami Southwest. Earlier this season, Bridge scored five first-half TDs in a win over Ronald Reagan – that broke Frank Gore’s Miami-Dade County record for first-half rushing scores.
Devon Wright, running back, Taravella: Wright carried 28 times for 313 yards and scored three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, to lead Taravella past Coral Springs 24-21 in the annual Mayor's Cup. "I've been in this game for 36 years, and I've never coached a young man with the toughness of Wright," Taravella coach Dan Marguriet said to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. "He makes great plays when he has to.”
Chris James, quarterback, Fort Myers Dunbar: The junior was 9-for-14 for 252 yards with a TD pass and also rushed for three touchdowns as Dunbar beat East Lake 43-29. Four of James’ passes went for 30 or more yards, and he carries six times for 23 yards overall.
Jeremy Davis, running back/defensive back, Cape Coral: The Miami commitment rushed six times for 120 yards and two touchdowns, including an 86-yarder, in a 28-7 win over Lehigh. On defense, Davis had three interceptions, including returning one 72 yards for a score.
Marcus Shaw, running back, DeSoto County: Shaw, the state’s leading rusher, finished with 328 yards on the ground and five touchdowns in a 35-21 win over Bayshore. Three of his scoring runs were 75 yards-plus. Shaw, a USF commitment, went over the 2,000-yard mark for the season in a row. And he loves playing Bayshore: In the last two meetings between the teams, he has now run for a combined 670 yards and 11 TDs.
Quay Barnes, running back, Apopka: Barnes rushed for 233 yards on just 10 carries and had five rushing touchdowns in a 49-21 win over Evans. Barnes also scored on a 61-yard pass reception.
