Football playoffs: Second-round preview

The postseason field is down to 272 in the UIL's 10 football divisions, with the 3A, 2A and Class A Division I brackets already whittled down to 16 teams apiece.

There are several notable matchups in Texas this weekend. Here are the ones CoachesAid.com would bring to the medal stand:

Class 5A

Gold

Region II Division II: Southlake Carroll (10-1) vs. Allen (10-1)

  • Where and when? 8 p.m. Saturday @Cowboys Stadium, Arlington
  • Why? Well, let's see. All we've got here is a program that's won four 5A state titles this decade vs. the 2008 5A Division I champion, competing this season in D-II despite being the fourth-largest school in the state. Carroll appears slightly stronger on offense, while Allen brings in the better defense statistically. Keep an eye on Eagles QB Matt Brown, whose combined rushing and passing totals are up to 38 total touchdowns and 3,242 total yards.

Silver

Region II Division I: Dallas Skyline (11-0) vs. DeSoto (9-2)

  • Where and when? 6 p.m. Saturday @Ford Stadium, Dallas
  • Why? The second-ranked Raiders pit the Metroplex's top defense against the Eagles' top-ranked offense (and the Skyline offense and DeSoto offense aren't bad, either).

Bronze

Region IV Division I: San Antonio Southwest (10-0) vs. Harlingen (11-0)

  • Where and when? 7:30 p.m. Friday @Javelina Stadium, Kingsville
  • Why? It's the Rodney Dangerfield Bowl. The Dragons often get lost in the San Antonio shuffle; the Cardinals, meanwhile, seek to end the Rio Grande Valley's 48-year state-title drought.

Also: The Woodlands (11-0) vs. Round Rock Stony Point (10-1), 6 p.m. Saturday @Woodforest Stadium, Shenandoah (Region II Division I); El Paso Coronado (11-0) vs. Abilene (10-0), noon Saturday @Grande Communications Stadium, Midland (Region I Division II); Katy (10-1) vs. Humble Atascocita (10-1), 1 p.m. Saturday @Tully Stadium, Houston.

Class 4A

Gold

Region IV Division I: Lake Travis (11-0) vs. Cibolo Steele (9-2)

  • Where and when? Noon Saturday @Alamodome, San Antonio
  • Why? Lake Travis puts its 41-game winning streak on the line against a Steele team that last year gave the Cavaliers all they could handle in this round before falling 38-21. The Knights played that one without injured sophomore RB Malcolm Brown; healthy this season as a junior, he's rushed for 1,872 yards and 32 touchdowns. But Steele also has been shaky against pass-oriented spread offenses ... like the one Michael Brewer (3,758 total yards, 46 total TDs) runs to perfection.

Silver

Region III Division II: Brenham (9-2) vs. Port Neches-Groves (11-0)

  • Where and when? 6 p.m. Friday @Thorne Stadium, Houston
  • Why? The Indians continue to find ways to win; they've beaten no one by more than 33 points. The Cubs bounced back from their Week 10 loss to Waller by cruising past Manor 45-14.

Bronze

Region II Division I: Longview (10-1) vs. Waco Midway (9-2)

  • Where and when? 2 p.m. Saturday @Kincaide Stadium, Dallas
  • Why? The Lobos have shown over the past six weeks why they started the year ranked No. 1, winning by an average of 40.5 points. They'll test a Panthers defense allowing 14.5 points per game.

Also: Medina Valley (10-1) vs. Corpus Christi Calallen (10-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday @Victoria (Region IV Division II); Carrollton Newman Smith (9-2) vs. Dallas Carter (9-2), 7:30 p.m. Friday @Irving Schools Stadium (Region II Division I); Aledo (10-1) vs. Stephenville (9-2), 7:30 p.m. Friday @Cowboys Stadium, Arlington.

Class 3A

Gold

Region IV Division I: Sealy (11-0) vs. Cuero (11-0)

  • Where and when? 7:30 p.m. Friday @Bobcat Stadium, San Marcos
  • Why? Two dominant teams collide in this regional semifinal. The Tigers average nearly 44 points per game and won one of the state's toughest districts, 25-3A. But they also have allowed 28 points or more each of the past four weeks. They'll need to be more solid on defense against a balanced, high-scoring Gobblers offense led by 1,941-yard rusher Trent Jackson. Cuero has kept nine of 11 opponents under 20 points, but explosive Edna posted 32 in Week 10.

Silver

Region I Division II: Graham (10-1) vs. Monahans (11-0)

  • Where and when? 7 p.m. Friday @Sweetwater
  • Why? The Steers' passing attack is one blocked extra point vs. Brownwood away from a shot at making this a battle of unbeatens. The Loboes defense has allowed 21 points the past five weeks.

Bronze

Region IV Division II: La Grange (9-2) vs. Edna (9-2)

  • Where and when? 7 p.m. Saturday @El Campo
  • Why? Pack a late supper. This QB battle will take awhile. The Leopards' Josh Schneider is a pure passer; the Cowboys' Kam Jones accounted for eight TDs last week against Luling.

Also: Bandera (8-2) vs. Ingleside (10-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday @Floresville (Region IV Division II); Carthage (11-0) vs. Mexia (9-2), 7:30 p.m. Friday @Forney (Region III Division II); Cleveland (10-1) vs. Caldwell (8-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday @Waller (Region III Division II).

Class 2A

Gold

Region II Division I: Pilot Point (11-0) vs. Gunter (11-0)

  • Where and when? 7:30 p.m. Friday @Memorial Stadium, Frisco
  • Why? Pilot Point RB Jarman Johnson is coming off a 383-yard, six-touchdown rushing performance last week against Boyd. The Bearcats scored 59 but still won by just 17. Gunter's defense, which last week blanked Hooks 28-0, will be tested, but the Tigers' offense figures to do some damage. Chad Tucker ran for 238 yards in Gunter's bidistrict victory.

Silver

Region I Division I: Amarillo River Road (8-3) vs. Littlefield (10-1)

  • Where and when? 7:30 p.m. Friday @Plainview
  • Why? Can River Road catch lightning in a bottle and repeat its upset of defending state champ Muleshoe? The Wildcats pulled away from Alpine in the second half last week.

Bronze

Region III Division II: Daingerfield (10-1) vs. Garrison (9-2)

  • Where and when? 7:30 p.m. Friday @Whitehouse
  • Why? Garrison swept through 20-2A, but Daingerfield did the same through tougher 17-2A. Each has lost to a state power: Garrison to 2A Division I Arp, Daingerfield to 3A Gilmer.

Also: Rogers (9-2) vs. Blanco (10-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday @Round Rock ISD Stadium (Region IV Division II); Aubrey (10-2) vs.  Omaha Paul Pewitt (9-2), 7 p.m. Saturday @Royse City (Region II Division II); Vanderbilt Industrial (10-1) vs. Three Rivers (9-2), 7:30 p.m. @Seguin (Region IV Division II).

Class A

Gold

Region I Division I: Canadian (9-1) vs. Wellington (10-1)

  • Where and when? 7 p.m. Friday @Kimbrough Stadium, Canyon
  • Why? This Top 10 matchup features two high-scoring offenses, with Wellington posting better defensive numbers while Canadian comes in rested after a bye week. The Skyrockets' do-everything QB Westin Williams accounted for five first-half touchdowns last week: three runs, one pass and one punt return. The Wildcats, meanwhile, are the defending Division I state champs.

Silver

Region IV Division I: Goldthwaite (11-0) vs. Shiner (9-1)

  • Where and when? 7:30 p.m. Friday @Elgin
  • Why? The Comanches have allowed 6 points to each of their past three opponents and are coming off a bye week. The Eagles also rely on defense  they've pitched four shutouts.

Bronze

Region IV Division II: La Pryor (10-0-1) vs. Bruni (9-1-1)

  • Where and when? 7:30 p.m. Friday @South San Stadium, San Antonio
  • Why? The Bulldogs and Badgers met in Week 0 in a game won by ... the weather. That's how you can have a tie in the overtime era storms ended the game early with the score tied at 14.

Also: Springlake Earth (10-1) vs. Seagraves (10-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday @Wolfforth (Region I Division II); Mason (9-2) vs. Falls City (11-0), 7:30 p.m. @Boerne; Sunray (8-2) vs. Wheeler (10-1), 7:30 p.m. @Bivins Stadium, Amarillo.
